Kumi’s Critique for Assignment 2
J. Lappies’ Definitions Part 2
Missing sources for definitions.Mozilla
There's probably some things that could be worth mentioning in the definition. Mozilla uses the sorce code from Netscape. Mosaic was a popular web browser that the people behind Mozilla hoped to unseat. "Mozilla" is also the company mascot, depicted as a cartoon lizard. Mozilla continued developing the browser, but eventually the ties would be cut off when it was announced that Netscape Navigator would end and AOL agreed to use Internet Explorer.
Carrier signal
There could be a little more information that could be added to the definition. Carrier signals can be modulated or impressed with a second information-carrying signal. The carrier doesn't actually have any information unless it is changed in some way, like having the amplitude changed, frequency changed, or its phase changed.
Modem
The definition sounds pretty good. Maybe what could be added is that it's the analog PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) that the digital data signals are sent through.
Terminal server
I'm not sure about the first sentence...it's a small, specialized networked computer that connects many terminals to a LAN through one network connection. Any user on the network can connect to other network hosts.
B2B
I think you could add some more on what's involved with B2B transactions, or what's behind it (advantages and disadvantages). One can gain competitive advantage, but a single corporate purchase is cumbersonme and costly.
HTTPS
You should probably mention that it provides for "secure" transactions to happen on the Internet (so you can order something using a credit card number while worrying less about people reading the number while it is sent through the network).
ODBC
ODBC is short for Open DataBase Connectivity. I think I understand the definition after reading another one--it says that it is "a way of writing software in one program so you can get access to data in another program." (Newton's...).
JDK
The definition looks pretty good, but it is also bundled with a documentation generator and a bytecode compiler. It is the most widely used Java SDK (software developer kit).
Intellectual property
You should mention that there are different methods of protection for each. Patents grant an invventor exclusive right to the invention for 20 years from the date of application. The invention must also go through certain criteria to be issued a patent. A copyright gives authors the exclusive right to reproduce, adapt, distribute copies of, perform, or display literary, dramatic, musical, artisitic, and certain other intellectual works A trademark grants ownership of a name, word, symbol, or device that indicates the sorce of traded goods and distinguishes those goods from the goods of others. The trademark owner prevents others from using a simmilar mark that can be confused with it, but can't be used to prevent them from selling the same goods under a different mark (Newton's....).
TCP
Short for "Transmission Control Protocol." You should mention that it is the portion of the TCP/IP protocol suite that governs the exchange of sequential data.
VPN
You should probably mention with the last part that the VPN allows for more secure transfers of information over the Internet.
K. Murphy’s Definitions Part 2
NIC
The definition looks good, though there seems to be other definitions associated to the term "NIC" as well.
ODBC
This definition sounds pretty good also.
Dancing Frog
Almost good, but a suggestion would be to add something like, "a problem which only you encounter – when you show it to someone else to try and solve it, it works problemless." I read it was derived from the WB mascot frog that dances and sings to viewers but then stops and croaks like a normal frog.
Backbone
You may want to add that the backbone is one basis for design of the overall network service.
ISO
You might want to add that the responsibility of defining the international standards in the fields of electrical and electronic engineering is the responsiblity of the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission).
Memex
I suggest putting that Vannevar Bush initially wrote an article about the memex in the 1930s but it didn't get much attention until 1945.
Blog
A blog can be a type of short essay, also. Bloggers, unlike journalists who move from topic to topic, are usually passionate about their subjects.
